NaBloPoMo Day 1 - Time for a challenge!

Eek, cold weather is coming!
I have decided to take on the National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) 2013 challenge.  In this challenge, you commit to writing a post a day for the entire month.  If you want to learn more about this and possibly even try it, go here - NaBloPoMo . Those who sign up before November 5 and are US residents can win a prize.  Being Canadian, I'm just participating for the fun of it and to perhaps connect with new people.

They give you a list of writing prompts for each weekday of the month, leaving the weekends “free-style”.  You can use them or not; it’s up to you.  I think that I will use them unless something incredibly interesting happens in my day.

November 1st prompt – If you found one million dollars in the morning and had to spend it by nightfall, what would you do with the money?

Where do I even start?!  Imagine, one million dollars in my pocket to use any way I wish.  If I had longer, I would immediately think of buying a small house but, since a house sale can’t take place in a day, we’ll set aside that idea.  It would certainly be an action-packed day of shopping.

First though, I would hand a chunk of money to each family member just because I’m nice like that.  You’re all welcome!

Then I would be off to the stores to refurnish my apartment and buy all those little (and not so little) things that have been on my wish-list for FAR too long.  Don’t get me wrong, my current stuff isn’t total trash but a lot of it is, shall we say, tired looking and I’ve got a couch that too many cat claws have loved too dearly.

Next stop would be new wardrobes for me and the kids.  The kids keep growing out of everything they own (proved by my ever-growing grocery bill) and, since my small clothing budget is spent on them, my clothes are looking almost as tired as my furniture (minus the cat claws).

Of course, I could never forget to go to Chapters and spend a wad of dough there.  I am a voracious reader and am in heaven every time I go there.  The kids and I would go WILD in there!

In case you’re thinking that I’m all about material things, I would make a stop at the bank and open accounts for the kids’ post-secondary education because my kids WILL continue their education after high school.  Whether I win the lottery or go broke doing it, my kids are going to get every opportunity that I can give them to succeed in whatever field they choose to go into.  I foresee the “going broke” option to be the reality of my future on this one, of course.

As we approach sunset, I would then take whatever money is left and walk into the nearest food bank with it.  I know what it's like to have to count out pennies to try to buy milk for my kids and I would want to see the rest of my money go to help those in similar or worse situations.  This last act is inspired by all of the posts that Scary Mommy (Jill Smokler) has been sharing with us for the Scary Mommy Thanksgiving Project.  She and her legions of readers have been working to make sure that struggling families can get a break from worry for Thanksgiving; definitely something to be thankful for.  Jill, you rock!!

  1. I should join the November challenge but my postings have gone down to once a week, two if I'm lucky so I probably wouldn't get in seven. But I all come read yours :)

    1. This will definitely be a challenge for me since, like you, I tend to only post once a week. I plan to have some fun with the prompts and see how far I get. Wish me luck!
