Always Remember

Today is Remembrance Day here in Canada and Veterans Day in the States.

Today is a day to remember all of the brave men and women who fought and died so that we can have the freedom that we enjoy today.  Because of them, we all have the right to speak our minds, the right to protest, the right to distribute information, the right to an education and so many other rights that I'm not listing but are there nonetheless because of them.

The poppy became the symbol of Remembrance Day, of all that was fought for by our veterans and the fallen soldiers, as has this poem by Canadian physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead.  Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Flanders fields today

    1. I agree Shail. There is so much that we take for granted today that we wouldn't have if it weren't for the men and women who stand on the front lines.
